Hadilath, you must have an extraordinary amount of will-power, i have tried and tried without any artificial aid, but i found it very hard to not give in to temptation. LoL yeah stu, they are very adictive, i am sat here now and my little finger keeps twitching the way of the packet Dani Hail Satan

Well I did and then started again. It's proving to be a lot harder this time. I've developed asthma through smoking it seems so when I do smoke I have a bad caugh and sometimes breathing dificulties which isn't good. So really I have to quit. Just will power is the best way to quit really I think.

My philosophy was that while the gum simply switched my addiction over to the gum, it wasn't harming my health as much as the smokes.
The great thing about them is you can chew them for longer than you can smoke a cigarette and so they were also cheaper for me. A pack of 30 pieces of gum would last me a few days where 20 fags would last 1 day.

Willpower?
Hmm....well, in a way I guess. For me feel like I'm acting in agreement with myself, which I suppose is one definition of willpower.........
I kinda felt like it was time to address things that were holding me back, and came to realise that I was not in control of smoking, it was a part of me that therefore needed to go.....? How could I claim to myself that I was free if I belonged to the little white stick? *g*
One reason I wouldn't have patches or gum...........If I'm quitting for the purpose of freeing myself, then substituting another dependency is a little defeating the point of the exercise *g*
Felt like I was doing what "I" wanted me to do? And seeing how to use a flow I'd tapped into, turn it against the attatchment I had to smoking....
lol as to giving into temptation, that's not too hard to counter when seen in the sense of smoking as compulsion.....giving in to temptation I don't have a problem with, giving in to compulsion I've learned my lesson on I hope:)
I also felt like I needed to show myself how far I'd come, and how strong I am when I act in accord with myself........
Hmm, ok, aside from all the babble that prolly doesn't make sense to anyone but me, all's I can offer is one "practical" tip........
When you feel like you want to feel the smoke entering and leaving your lungs, employ that very sensation against itself! Breathe as if smoking.......Visualise cleansing darkness as you inhale, and breathe out the attatchment to nicotine in a cloud of "smoke".......lol
LOL works for me.....

Sorry, Dani, the meaning of Shemhamforash.
From what I gather it is Hebrew. It means 'the explicit name'. It usually is a reference to God, but if we are speaking in Hebrew terms I guess then it is more accurate to say "Yahweh'.
I think La Vey is using it in an intentionally blasphemous way. Shemhamforash for him probably is another way of saying hail God but blasphemous so in this case the explicit name is Satan.
I think that what he's getting at (and this is a guess) is that it used to be taboo to say the name of God so to say Yahweh was blasphemous. Instead then they would say Shemhamforash. I guess it's another way of saying 'you know who', like in Harry Potter no-one says Voldemort they all say 'you know who'. Likewise the name Satan is like a one word blasphemy in itself. So if I'm reading La Vey's intentions correctly it's another way of saying Hail Satan. It draws on the whole idea of names being blasphemous when uttered. Supposed to be shocking and powerful and bold to say.
If I'm right then I think it's kind of lame. La Vey probably also liked the fact that it sounded like a good old piece of mystic mumbojumbo which would leave people like you and me thinking he was really cool and mysterious and smart for knowing all this wierd stuff. I don't really like blasphemy all that much. It has its uses and I think it's really effective sometimes but you won't catch me yelling 'Shemhamforash!' if I bump my head or break something precious or whatever.
