Wasn't sure whether this ffitted better here or under magick, decided on here..........
What do ppl think of the concept of surviving death as the ultimate goal of the process of self-development and result of lust for life......."real" possibility in a world where anything is possible, or simply transformational metaphor?

Hi Hadilath, nice to meet you. My short answer to this is, no we are all mortal and that's not going to change. My long answer is, what do you mean exactly? Should humans be working towards finding a 'cure for death' or do you mean we should all, individually, try our best not to die?

I guess more the latter, though with overtones of the former.....and a little bit of thinking too hard about children coming downstairs......Dunno, I was kinda in a weird mood when I wrote that question lol

LOL sorry that was me, obviously.forgot to log in! Further crazy thoughts..LOL please feel free to shoot this down, it does after all depend on the supposition that inserting one's intent into the mind of a target is possible (whatever means you care to take it that this is done by). ..hypothetical situation, supposing someone had in some manner created a vehicle which would convey their thoughts into the mind of another. THe first person then dies. Do the thoughts in the mind of the second person die, or are they then part of the mind of the second person? And if so, has not the first person to some extent "cheated death" ? LOL as I said, slightly non-rational probably:)

Oh Wow, I Love Your Line Of Questioning! Its So Creative.
I Don't Think Anyone Can Actually Answer That Question With A Deffinate Answer. However I Don't See No Reason Why The Thoughts Of The First Person Should Die, Most Of You Will Disagree With This But I Believe That The Body Dies And The Soul Lives On...
So I Think That He Didn't Physically Cheat Death, But Spiritually He Did.

Well, thanx, Dani, though I don't see it as particularly creative, more as a fusing of several trains of thought I was having at the time:)
OK, extend the hypothesis, what if the person had planted such thoughts in the minds of _several_ people b4 death? How much/many of the first person would then still "exist"?
(getting into really wierd territory here now lol.and all seems to depend on how one views ppls minds being connected, I know!)

Hmm 'Mass Schitzophrenia' I've Never Thought Of One Mans Thoughts Entering The Minds Of Several, I Suppose It's Spiritually Possible. If This Sort of Thing 'IS' Possible, I Would Assume That One Mans Thoughts Could Only Be Planted In Another One Mans Mind, Unless He Puts His Thoughts Of Knowledge Into One Man, His Pervy Thoughts Into A Another Man And So On... If This Makes No Sence...Blame The Vodka And Cranberry Juice ;D Dani Hail Satan

Jeez Hadilath did you do a philosophy degree or something?! I remember when I did it we had the big discussion of 'if I took person A and person B and swapped their brains around would person A start to live person B's life and vice versa'. The only thing I could think throughout the whole discussion was 'this doesn't matter because they'd never survive the operation' and 'if you really want to know then why don't you try it'. It melts my head thinking about stuff like that, I guess I'm more scientific than I think. I want to work with stuff I can see, feel and hear happening . But if we take the question as I originally interpreted it (sorry but if I pursued what you were really asking I think I'd go mad) I don't think we should spend our lives trying to avoid or cheat death. You would be so busy trying not to die that you might forget to live. And should we be trying to look for a cure for death. No I don't think so. If you knew you were going to live forever you would have no sense of urgency to achieve or experiment. Isn't the old phrase 'life's too short' the one that reminds us to get on with living? I think if we lived forever we'd lose motivation and life would become a barren wasteland.

LOL actually...I did the first year of one ( to be specific, Physics and Philosophy at Pembroke, Oxford), then took a year out to explore the world and life, and never really went back.....(well, did resit mods, but my mind wasnt on the exams by then lol)
*giggles* I think the point of thought experiments was that you didn't have to worry about stuff like that lol..... Though I must admit, I did have similar thoughts, mainly about how wet I would get if the "bucket on the string" representing agruments on absolute/relative spacetime spilled out on me while I was whirling it *g*
(And just don't get me started on the RSPCA and Schrodingers cat.....lol)
As to your points on my ideas, or what you took them to be initially.well, yeah I can see that maybe actually living for ever would eventually take the edge of life......But then, from the POV of _not_ living for ever, does that not equally mean that trying to live for ever _adds_ to life? To me I think it does. If the fact that "life is too short" makes one live it more fully, then is not a natural extention of that, to seek to extend the time one has?
LOL i dunno.I've also come across the conecpt of simply trying to get everything done in the time one has, and planning according to that..but that seems a bit defeatist to me lol.
Dani, in answer to your points....
*giggles again* Now, given the choice, would I want the "man's" thoughts of knowledge or his pervy thoughts? (assuming my own mind was left intact in recieving them)
Hehe now thats a cloooose one, my two driving passions............*g*
But actually, I kinda meant, what if he could be "copied/linked" into each mind.....would there then be "one file" with different "shortcuts" to it in each mind.....or a different "copy" of his "file" in each mind?
LOL pass the vodka.....Just go easy on the cranberry juice for me, can't stand the stuff! ( Love the colour, hate the taste)
